Auf Initiative des Kurfrsten in Hannover wurde das weite nasse Moor im 18. und 19. Jahrhundert Zug um Zug planmig ent wssert und mit Kolonisten besiedelt. In harter, entbehrungsreicher Arbeit zogen die neuen Siedler Grben, bauten Katen auf dem Hochmoor und stochen Torf, den sie als Brennmaterial
